Should I pay to have my business come up first on Alexa?

Q. Dear Zenagos,
A vendor offered me an opportunity to pay $500 a month to have Alexa recommend my local service first when people ask for it. This seems like a good deal. What do you think?

If someone is telling you that you can have your business be recommended first on Alexa in exchange for a fee, that is not strictly true. Alexa bases its recommendation on search engine rankings. Other voice assistants do the same thing – both Alexa and Cortana rely on Microsoft’s Bing search engine, while Apple’s Siri relies on Google’s search engine.
