Zenagos Expert Networking Tip: Use an Electronic Business Card

Q. Dear Zenagos,
I’m tired of dealing with printing and updating business cards. Is there a better way?
–Editha

Ditch those paper business cards – the exchanging of contact information has evolved. There are a number of ways that you can use digital business cards and reap a variety of benefits.

Use the LinkedIn App
If you have a LinkedIn profile, and the person with whom you are networking does, too, then it is easy to connect using your phones. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the LinkedIn app on your phone.
This may also work in a phone browser, but the app is easier to use.

2. Click in the search box.

Look at the top of the app. A box should appear with a magnifying glass on the left and the word “Search” inside. Click inside, right on top of the word “Search.”

3. Click on the icon.

A QR-shaped icon will appear at the right side of the search box. Click on it.

4. Offer your QR code to your networking contact.

Your contact can use their own phone camera to read the QR code. Or, you can click on “Share my code” and send it some other way.

5. Save your LinkedIn QR code to your photos.

Saving the image of your LinkedIn QR code makes it easier to pull up in future conversations.

If you work in a corporate environment, LinkedIn is pretty popular and is an easy way to share your information.

QR Code Apps
LinkedIn provides one example of a digital business card that is based on a QR code. There are dozens of other such apps, including Popl, Blinq, and HiHello.

NFC Apps
Near-field communication apps use a card that you tap on someone else’s phone to send contact information or receive it (or both). Many of the QR-code companies also offer NFC business card options. Other vendors include VistaPrint, dot., and Mobilo.

Power Networking
Once you’ve gotten comfortable with a digital card, consider taking your sales to the next level by integrating your business card app into your Customer Relationship Management solution. This can create an efficient workflow that will send you reminders and help you follow up after a conference, maximizing your valuable sales time.

If you’ve been in the workforce for a while and are used to paper business cards, adjusting to the digital revolution will take a little practice, but the investment is worth it. Not only will you be saving a few trees, but also you will be able to make changes to your contact information on the fly in a way that you never could before.
